28/7/2006 - Pictures of Mount Barrow and Mount Barrow Falls

As mentioned in my previous post, I have not managed to get any Barrow pics organised.  While I had hoped to use my own photos, a quick search on the Internet found a couple of photos that beat anything I have to offer hands down...

I now know the National Library of Australia have a good collection of historic photos available on-line.  Among these are photos of...  you guessed it...  Mount Barrow and Mount Barrow Falls.

Mount Barrow by Frank Hurley

Mount Barrow Falls by Stephen Spurling

Do the photographers' names ring a bell?  Hurley is best known for accompanying Sir Ernest Shackleton on his infamous expedition to Antarctica and the amazing Southern Ocean rescue that followed.  I am not so familiar with Spurling's work.  There is a Mount Spurling just west of the Mountains of Jupiter on Tasmania's Central Plateau.  I guess this was named after him?

Hello Tastrekker

Yes, Mt Spurling was named after my grandfather - Stephen Spurling 3rd. He discovered nearby Lake Riengeena, which he named Lake Spurling, during his trip across the plateau in 1908. In 1955 the Tasmanian Nomenclature Board changed the name of the lake and named the nearby mountain in his memory.

I am currently working on a research project involving the three generations of Spurling photographers. Stephen Spurling 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Their names appear in various dictionaries of biography and in a number of articles/ books. if you would like more information, let me know.
Kind regards

Christine Burgess

About Me

G'day Everyone! I'm TasTrekker. I am mad keen on getting into the Tasmanian wilderness whenever family, work and church commitments allow. I have a wonderful wife and three fabulous children who share my wilderness treks from time to time. I plan to blog about my bushwalks as I do them. When I'm not going bush, I will reminisce about walks gone by. I may even muse about life in general on this gorgeous island. Enjoy!
