16/4/2007 - Pillinger Plane Wreck

Many years ago, I heard a story about a plane that crashed into the slopes of Mt Pillinger while attempting a food drop to a Boys Brigade group camped at Lees Paddocks.  The pilot was the only person on board and walked away relatively unscathed.

After getting instructions from a friend, I found the wreck and took a few groups to see it during the mid nineties.  None of the groups had a real interest in planes so each time, it was a fairly brief stop before we continued our walk.

Recently, I met a bloke who was a commercial pilot and loves anything to do with flying.  When I suggested a trip to visit a plane wreck deep in the rain-forested slopes of a mountain, he was keen as mustard.

Yesterday, we took advantage of a gorgeous autumn day and headed for the upper Mersey high country.  It had been 11 years since I last found the wreck but my memory is still serving me well.  After following a  bearing through various vegetation types, the compass led us directly to the wreck in King William pine forest on a very steep slope.

For the next half hour, my friend studied the wreck and informed me it was a Piper Cherokee 140 and would have been quite new when it crashed.  He was able to identify a large percentage of the plane, including wings, fuselage, pedals, seats, engine, wheel struts, etc.  It looks like some souveniers have been taken such as the propeller, tail and wheels.  Even one of the 4 engine cylinders is missing.  That would weigh a bit!

After perusing the wreck, we returned to the road via a slightly different route.  It was a terrific day for bushwalking and I'm thrilled to have been able to share the wreck with someone who could really appreciate it.

So glad you could make this walk, Nathan, with friend Clinton. Don't think I want to make the walk into the forest to see the Cherokee...but I am looking forward to our next flight together, maybe in a Jabiru!

9/2/2010 - Plane wreck

Having just returned from climbing Pelion West and visiting the same plane crash site, I found your blog on this and your ascent of Pelion most interesting. Hated those huge boulders but it was easier coming down than going up I must say!

23/2/2010 - 1970's Plane Crash

Posted by Bruce Elliston
Hi, I stumbled upon your site while looking for info. on the crash mentioned in your blog/article. The reason I was looking is that it was my father and a co-owner of the plane who were in that crash and I was searching for the news article. I can inform you that there were 2 people on the plane, not one. Also I understood that it was a Piper Cherokee 180 and that the date was January the 6th 1973. My father was at the rear of the plane, off-loading the supplies to the Boy Scouts who were on some sort of camp. He was not wearing shoes because he said the it was uncomfortable to kneel in the back with them on. After the crash, I understand that he assisted the pilot, who had been dazed by the crash, from the plane which was on fire. They both ran from the scene fearing an explosion and upon their return shortly afterward, discovered (or thought) that the fire extinguisher had exploded, dousing the fire. They then located a creek and followed it down, wearing one shoe each, (Dallas having given Dad one of his) until eventually they stumbled across the Scout Group. From there they were taken by helicopter to Pardoe airport.

About Me

G'day Everyone! I'm TasTrekker. I am mad keen on getting into the Tasmanian wilderness whenever family, work and church commitments allow. I have a wonderful wife and three fabulous children who share my wilderness treks from time to time. I plan to blog about my bushwalks as I do them. When I'm not going bush, I will reminisce about walks gone by. I may even muse about life in general on this gorgeous island. Enjoy!
